NOWRA has a special place in Melbourne Cup history and "the Loving Cup" will visit the South Coast town as part of its tour this year.

Archer, the winner of the first two Melbourne Cups, reportedly was walked from Nowra to Melbourne and has had the racecourse there named in his honour. It will be the centre of celebrations when the cup arrives on October 3.

"We are thrilled to be included on the itinerary for the Melbourne Cup Tour and plans are already underway for the cup's arrival," Shoalhaven City Turf Club secretary Lynne Locke said.

The town's other link to the Melbourne Cup is that 1978 winner Arwon is Nowra spelt backwards.
