NOWRA has a special place in Melbourne Cup history, and "the Loving Cup" will visit the South Coast town as part of its tour this year.

Archer, the winner of the first two Melbourne Cups, was reportedly walked from Nowra to Melbourne and has had the racecourse there named in his honour.

It will be the centre of celebrations when the Cup arrives on October 3.

"We are thrilled to be included on the itinerary for the Melbourne Cup Tour, and plans are already underway for the Cup's arrival," Shoalhaven City Turf Club secretary Lynn Locke said.

"The visit provides a fantastic opportunity for our community to get up close to this national icon and celebrate Nowra's significant contribution to the historic Melbourne Cup race."

The town's other link to the Melbourne Cup is that 1978 winner Arwon is Nowra spelt backwards.
