THERE are race meetings and there are race meetings and for the Hunter's kart racers there is one meeting that stands above the rest, the annual Newcastle City Cup.
The Cup meet is being held this weekend at the Newcastle Kart Club's Mt Sugarloaf track, and organisers are expecting up to 200 entries for the 14 racing classes. Not only are they expecting full fields, they are also expecting newly crowned senior national heavy class champion Nathan Sinclair and NSW and Australian junior champion James Kovacic to be among the front runners in their respective classes. Both drivers are members of the Newcastle club.In what is expected to be a full-on weekend of competition, drivers will take part in practice, qualifying and some heat racing today and the remainder of the heat racing plus the class finals tomorrow and all will be competing for a prize fund totalling $350 for each class.Club spokesman Errol Hancock said that as well as racing for the cash, drivers will also be racing for a place in the history books."The aim of this event is for drivers to break the current lap record for their respective classes in the final."They don't have to win a race, they just have to become the new record holder. Whoever does that gets their name on the club's honour board," Hancock said.Currently the lap record stands at 56.5 seconds for the Midget class and around 48 seconds for the 125cc classes.Karts are on the track from 9am today and tomorrow. Spectator entry is free both days and the club will have a full canteen service running.
